RETAIL
UPDATE
A&P (The
Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company) has completed a long-term
initiative to develop a new supply chain and business process
infrastructure. Together, A&P, IBM and Retek upgraded processes and
business systems between A&P-operated offices, distribution centers
and stores, and between the company and its suppliers.
Atkins Market in
Amherst, MA has completed construction of a new garden center and retail
expansion.
Berkshire Coop
in Great Barrington, MA has leased a new location on Bridge Street. The
store opening is planned for late summer.
Bread & Circus
in Hadley, MA plans to expand their current location. The store re-opening
will be in late summer or early fall of this year.
City Market
in Burlington, VT has a new Grocery Buyer, Nancy Dinkel. She has
been working in the grocery department for 4 years and involved in natural
foods for about 20 years.
David's Natural Market,
based in Columbia, MD, opened its third location in Gambrills, MD.
Dr. Be Well Naturally
in Plainview, NY was recently sold to Peter Ross, the former supplements
manager of Rising Tide in Glen Cove, NY.
Food Emporium
has lost Dan DiPierro. The new Director of Grocery Merchandising is
Jim Healy. Dan has taken a
position with Kradsdale Supermarkets as the head of merchandising.
Harris Teeter has
opened a new 40,000 square foot store in Charlotte, NC. The new store is
located at 11516 Providence Rd. in the Rea Village Shopping Center.
Life Thyme
Uptown on Broadway in New York
City closed its doors on Feb 28th.
Publix
Super Markets intends
to open approximately 69 supermarkets in 2003 as part of its plan to spend
$600 million on new stores and warehouses, on remodeling and expanding
existing facilities, and on new or enhanced information technology
applications.
River
Valley Market, a
new retail cooperative, has a lease agreement for 225 Rear King Street in
Northampton, MA. The new 9,000 square foot store will open in July or
August this year.
Stop
& Shop Supermarket Company
announced that it reached an agreement with A&P (The Great
Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company) to purchase four A&P supermarkets.
The stores are located in Killingly, CT, Peterborough, NH and two in
Martha's Vineyard, MA.
Tops
Markets - Ahold
USA will be integrating the procurement and merchandising functions for
Tops Markets into their Giant, Carlisle, PA division. This is expected to
be completed by the Fall of 2003.
Wegman's
will be opening a new store, their first in the Philadelphia area, on
April 27th. The store will be located at 1056 E. Lancaster Ave. in
Downingtown, PA. There are also plans to open new stores in Fairfax, VA
and Sterling, VA next year.
Whole Foods Market
opened a new 40,000 square foot store in Midtown Atlanta. The new store is
located at 650 Ponce de Leon Avenue in the Midtown Place shopping center.
